my buddy had a headlight bulb burn out so while he has to replace one he is taking the opportunity to consider upgrading to better lights. so first off is this even worth it? if it is what color light would you go with? he wants 8000k. From what I remember, water has a slight blue color to it so the blue light will reflect back making it harder to see while something like 4300k would cut thru the water and lite up what you are looking at. Maybe thats not true? his friend with what is described as a ‘ricer’ integra says 8000k so....

His car is the ‘04 outback H3.0. (I think the one in the foreground burned to the ground)

and some yellow lights for your time.

I would err toward a whiter light more 4-5000k keeps everything clear and doesn’t get you extra attention.

Thats another reason I thought 4300k would be a good choice. I kinda like the 3000k but I thought it might get attention, maybe not as much as the blue of the 8000k. do you kow if either colors cuts thru the weather better?

Don’t put HIDs in a reflector housing. The light pattern will a) not illuminate the road, and b) go right into the eyes of other drivers. If you’re going to do it, get some projector retrofits for your headlamp assemblies.

I think white is the best for vision, but then I always buy white, I googled and found these.

I looked into the site, and they sell the projector assemblies as well as retrofit services. They’ll take any headlight you send them, open it and retrofit a projector into it. They quote 300-1100 dollars for labor, plus 200-400 for the kit.

Of course, just buying normal light bulbs is a lot cheaper and will illuminate better than doing a half-assed ricer HID conversion (that is to say, jamming an HID bulb and ballast into your reflectors).

holy shit thats a lot know $$$. slightly relate, my father had a T100 and wanted a certain type of toneau cover. The company didn;t have one for that tuck but they said it we provided the necessary dimensions for them, they would make one and send it to use for half price, and if it fit would be added to the catalog. Everything worked good and for a while my father had the only T-100 with a softtop toneau

There are a lot of tutorials online for doing it yourself, but you’re baking the lights in an oven to soften the adhesive and then dremeling a hole in them. With the WRXs there was always the STi headlight option, but new units from Subaru were somewhere between $600 and $800 each, and the used ones never dropped much due to demand.

I don’t know if the Legacy units and the Outback units are interchangeable in 04, but if they are, the cheapest HID route is JDM.

they look pretty close. Arn’t those reflector housings tho? I thought you said HID in reflectors don;t work well.

I’m willing to concede, I don’t know what the stock design of the JDM lights are. I’m going off the eBay ad, which could be incorrect. It is possible to design a reflector from the factory to work with HIDs, though this rarely happened...the Lincoln Mark VIII is the only one I can think of. Similarly, even though my WRX has projectors, they were designed to work with halogens so it’d have most of the same problems if you were to put HIDs in it.

8000k is really blue and without projectors it’ll be bright but in direct light and not really help all that much as far as distance is concerned, as in he will be outrunning his lights at highway speeds. In my opinion tell him to get some 4300k halogen light bulbs and call it a day. I’m sure his headlights are probably hazed to shit so tell him to save the money off any HID kit and buy a headlight restorer kit along with new halogen bulbs.

Philips HID D2R bulb I believe would work. My Subaru STI came stock with HIDs and did not have projectors. It required D2R bulb which are designed specifically for reflectors. They still had a nice clean cut off line and would not “dazzle” on coming drivers. Granted the Subarus headlights were designed for that specific HID bulbs it was not a retrofit. However it does go to show that projectors are not required for HIDs. Rather than using Amazon or eBay, have your buddy try this link to find HIDs specific to the vehicle: http://xenonsupply.com/

They may not have anything for his specific model, but it is at least worth a try.
